Off-site Field Trips

Discover new innovations, create meaningful dialogue and get inspired by participating in an off-site field trip and technical tour. See firsthand how others in the minerals industry are improving methods, overcoming obstacles and reaching operational goals.

Field trips are subject to cancellation based on limited attendance. Make your reservations for field trips during your conference registration. Conference registration will open in October 2017.

Your tour fee covers transportation and appropriate food and refreshments while on the tours. Tours usually include an opportunity to leave the busses and get an up close look at the project with guidance from project managers.

Northern Minnesota Field Trip (Two-Day)

Saturday, February 24 – Sunday, February 25, 2018 | $325 per person

Join fellow attendees for a unique two-day field trip to explore Northern Minnesota’s Iron Range. This field trip will showcase the region's capability and its innovation to remain a competitive mining region for over 100 years. The tour will include the University of Minnesota’s Natural Resources Research Center, a tour of Hibbing Taconite Company's mine and processing facility, an overview presentation from Polymet Mining Company as well as a trip through the Port of Duluth/Superior. The SME Minnesota Northern Subsection will host an evening dinner and reception at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm, Minnesota featuring the vast mining archives of the museum along with presentations from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and others. Featuring a mining-focused overview throughout the trip, attendees will visit the cities of Coleraine, Hibbing, Chisholm, Virginia, and Duluth. Don’t miss this opportunity for a one of a kind tour with peers.

Registration fee includes transportation departing from and returning to the Minneapolis Convention Center, lunches on Saturday and Sunday, reception and dinner on Saturday, and overnight accommodations on Saturday night. PPE will be provided to tour attendees.


SW Wisconsin Field Trip (One-Day)

Thursday, March 1, 2018 | 8:00 am – 3:30 pm | $75 per person

Featuring Fairmount Santrol’s silica mining and processing facility near Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, this all day tour will offers a look into the operations at this leading provider of high-performance sand and sand-based products.

Registration fee includes transportation departing from and returning to the Minneapolis Convention Center and lunch on Saturday. PPE requirements will be communicated to attendees by February 2018.
