FLSmidth’s Mineral Testing and Research Center - Global R&D for Mining

Wednesday, March 2, 2022 | 2:00 pm -4:30 pm | $10

Visit the Global Mining headquarters of FLSmidth located in Midvale, Utah.  The tour will include full walk through highlighting our testing capabilities to optimize current flowsheets or develop a full processing flowsheet as well as new equipment R&D.

FLSmidthStarting in comminution, we will see all testing needed for SAG and ball mill circuits, as well as HPGR and FLSmidth’s OK mill technology. Flotation testing, including new Reflux flotation technology will be highlighted. Hydrometallurgical testing, including leaching and pressure oxidation will be covered. Dewatering testing for thickening and filtration considerations for tailings  solutions will be shown. State of the art mineralogy capabilities including QEMSCAN, XRD, NIR, XRF, and optical microscopy and their uses will be presented.

The FLSmidth Minerals Research and Testing Center is a state-of-the-art facility that offers services for ore characterization through analytical, mineralogy, and comminution, metallurgical testing, equipment selection, flowsheet design, plant troubleshooting, and research in our Salt Lake City laboratory. The ore characterization and process mineralogy group has one of the most advanced integrated mineralogy service labs in the industry with senior staff well versed in mineral processes, with quantitative FTNIR/NIR model building, optical microscopy, SEM-EDS/WDS analysis, XRD Rietveld, clay analysis, and QEMSCAN/TIMA mineralogy.

As crushing, grinding, blending and splitting equipment represents significant operational and capital costs, accurate comminution testing reduces the design risk associated with ore and aggregate comminution circuits. The lab offers testing in Crusher Work Index, Bond Abrasion Work Index, Bond Ball/Rod Mill Indices, J-K Drop Weight Test, SMC Test®, Starkey SAG Design Test, Starkey SAG Variability Test (SVT), Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), HPGR, and VXP.

The FLSmidth Dawson and Hydrometallurgical Labs are world leaders in flotation testing,  pre-oxidation, and flowsheet design, offering testing services in most chemical and physical processing applications, including flotation, autoclaves, roasting, leaching, gravity separation, magnetic separation, and size classification. The solid/liquid separations team designs and optimizes dewatering operation with services in contract testing, process engineering, bench testing, pilot testing, and research and development testing, including full sample characterization, particle density and size analysis, slurry rheology, sedimentation, and filtration.

The in-house analytical laboratory supports the groups with flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), Eltra and LECO speciation, fire assay, and wet chemistry. The Minerals Testing and Research Center also houses the FLSmidth Research and Development group focusing on improving existing process and unit operations technologies, as well as developing ideas and proving concepts.

Tour Logistics:

  • 30 minutes from convention center, buses depart at 2 pm
  • 90 minutes for tour once onsite
  • Maximum 60 people. Will break into 3 groups of 20 each
  • Attendees must wear closed toe shoes. The site will provide safety glasses.
  • Busses will return to Convention Center at 4:30 pm.
